1. Liverpool will always have a special place in my football fan's heart because their 2005 Champions League victory was the first time I ever experienced true soccer euphoria first hand...
2. I was on a train from London to Liverpool, headed there for a conference. I had no idea the Champions League final was scheduled for that day or who was playing, because, like most Americans in 2005, I did not follow European soccer (or any soccer at that point, really).
3. So I'm on the train and the match begins. Folks are listening on the radio (it's 2005 remember) and LFC goes down 1-0. Groans. Then it's 2-0. More groans. Then 3-0 at half...utter despondence. Train pulls into the station and I walk a few blocks to my hotel...
4. Right before I get to my hotel the pub I'm walking by explodes like someone just shot 50 people out of a cannon. It's 3-1. I get to the hotel, quickly put my bags in my room.
5. But before I can even leave the hotel it's 3-2. I start heading to the pub to meet up with folks from the conference when again, scores of screaming fans run out of a pub and onto the street in ecstasy. It's 3-3.
6. I watched the rest of the match, including the penalty shootout at the end, at my final destination with a group of people I've just met, but with whom I quickly became fast friends.
7. We walked out into the streets of Liverpool that were flooded with joyous fans, drunkenly eating kebabs and hugging each other. It was an amazing experience that I completely lucked into, and will never forget.
