Hey, I wonder what leaders of the civil rights movement had to say about comparisons between gay rights and civil rights?

Let's take a look!
For starters, here's Julian Bond, former sit-in leader and head of the NAACP, who literally said that "gay rights are civil rights."
And how about John Lewis, former head of SNCC who was at the forefront of countless civil rights protests, who saw LGBT rights as an integral part of that work.
Let's not forget Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King Jr. who likewise saw gay rights as an extension of the civil rights cause.

And how about Jesse Jackson, aide to King and leader of Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition, who also saw discrimination against LGBT individuals as a civil rights issue.

I could go on, but you get the point.

And, of course, there were a number of civil rights leaders -- Bayard Rustin, Pauli Murray, James Baldwin, to name a few -- who were themselves LGBT and naturally saw "civil rights" and "gay rights" as intertwined.

The realignment was clearest in the presidential contests of the 1960s.

MS broke its age-old ties to national Democrats and instead chose independent segregationists in 1960 (Harry Byrd) & 1968 (George Wallace) and a GOP opponent of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 (Goldwater).

I'm mostly in agreement with JC here. It's a terrible idea to treat the EU elections as a referendum on Brexit, because whether or not Brexit happens, MEPs will be elected and for a period of time have an impact on EU policy theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
I know EU politics is about as dry as my vagina after seeing a picture of [insert name of pop star whose stans will get me if I actually type out the name] but it actually does matter, as whoever is elected does have impact on European politics for the duration they're in.
Now, that doesn't matter much if you're a brexiter. You just vote for the wreckers. Hey, that's fine by their standards, because they don't care much. But if you *do* care about EU, take a bit of time to think about how they'll sit within the EU rather than voting single issue

Obviously comparisons between gay rights and trans rights are ahistorical and offensive for many reasons, but there's a specific homophobia that comes out when people make them that I'd like to point out (thread):
Liberals always say "Well, these arguments were used to keep gays and lesbians out of locker rooms and classrooms and other spaces too!" As if that means anything. An argument being misused doesn't mean it never applies. If it did, *no* argument would be viable.
But moreover, the fact is that the exclusion of homosexuals from public life was wrong *because homosexuals are not a threat to heterosexuals.* Period. It's just a fact. Excluding gays and lesbians was wrong because they had no qualities that justified exclusion.

As of August 2017, the Artist's Union England determines the following hourly rates for an artist to be fair; £21.04 p/hr for a new graduate artist. That's about $28 dollars for my US friends. This goes up to £27.27 p/hr for 3 yrs+ exp, and £31.47 per hour for 5 years or more. /2
If you are doing sessional/daily rates such as presentations, consultations and installations. You should be looking at £166.24 p/day (£ 83.12 p/ 1⁄2 day) for a new grad artist, £218.19 p/day (£109.10 p/ 1⁄2 day) 3 yrs+ exp, £270.14 p/day (£135.07 p/ 1⁄2 day) 5 yrs+ exp. /3

The NY Times did an article a while back about the lack of female agents in the higher ranks. Of the bureau’s 13,523 agents over all, 2,683, or about 20 percent, are women.“There is a lack of women in leadership roles.”
“The big challenge we’ve been confronting over the last 2 years is, how do we get women & people of color” to join the F.B.I., Mr. Comey said last Sunday at a conference of police chiefs in San Diego. “That’s been our big trouble, & I’ve described it as a crisis.”
Comey needed to look at retention; not recruitment. How many women and people of color resign from the FBI. How many of these people file EEOs. Senator Grassley brought up the female whistleblowers & Comey refused to meet with us.
