Ok so here's a story that could never happen in any other period of human history. I was looking at CBC's social media stats and saw this... incredible outlier. 5.8 MILLION interactions on Facebook. The next most popular got 546k. How could this happen??? It gets weirder. 1/
CBC's most bone crushingly popular story of that past 12 months is... a local story from PEI, a province with 37 times less population than the number of Facebook interactions. Really. 2/ cbc.ca/news/canada/pr…
The story is about a new law for people who illegally pass schoolbusses. So, of course, it was posted in many small communities all over the US, by people thinking that this law now applied to their own town. 3/
(Bear in mind any of these people could have clicked on the article and known instantly that it was a Canadian news story, but I digress...) 4/
It was even posted in a group for school bus drivers, with almost 140,000 members. It got shared 4000 times from there. Wait, it gets better. 5/
The page is run out of Vietnam & Ukraine. Why? Well, they have a nice store with all sorts of cool swag for school bus drivers. It's a scam. It's all a scam. Drive content targeted to a niche group of people, then reap the profits. @ExploitingNiche knows all about this stuff. 6/
So, in essence, people not clicking the article and overseas scammers made an ultra-local CBC piece its most popular - BY FAR - of the last year. I imagine the author must have been quite surprised with her stats. Welcome to the hellscape internet, kids! END/
