This fake Tom Paine quote is making the rounds on conservative social media again. The funny thing is, the person who actually said this was not Tom Paine, but Edward Abbey, a 20th century anarchist and radical environmentalist.

Worth noting that this apocryphal Paine quote is fairly ubiquitous in conservative social media circles. I saw it on the Heritage Foundation's Facebook page back in 2014, for example, where it had 50,000 likes and had been shared 1900 times.

That blog seems pretty quaint and silly now...I abandoned it because it was both a) like shooting fish in a barrel and b) didn't really tell us much other than political hacks in America like to justify stupid opinions by attributing them to 18th century figures.
