Chapter Four, "What We Do For a Living," is much better. The Yang-Warren debate would be revealing here. If he's correct, the idea of doubling the minimum wage is nuts.
By his account, clerical, retail, and food service jobs are on the verge of total eradication; raising the minimum wage would just hasten the job Apocalypse.
He quotes the former CEO of McDonald's "It's cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who's inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries."
The robot arm, he notes, will only get cheaper and more efficient, while the fast food wage has no place to go but up.

Chapter 16: The Freedom Dividend.
He acknowledges that at this point, I must be thinking, "Wow, this guy's view of the future is bleak." A friend who read it said, "You should change the title to 'We're Fucked.'"

I was thinking just that. I was almost too depressed to keep reading, actually.
But I'm a professional. I was given this book to review. I can't stop now.

In addition to the problem of technological job loss, American society is in no position to fix its problems because--and here he offers a bullet-point list of reasons for despair--
among them, we're getting older, we have no savings, we're all on drugs, we're depressed, we're in debt, we're uneducated, our economy is consolidating around a handful of oligarchical firms, and we neither trust each other nor our institutions.

I spend a lot of time in Ciudad Juárez, MX (right at the US border) and a lot of people seem to be interested in day-to-day border crossing life, so I figured I'd share a bit about what it's like.

First off, Juárez and El Paso are essentially one city split by a border. A lot of people think about San Diego and Tiujana being close but those cities are ~40 mins apart. You can literally walk from Downtown El Paso into Downtown Juárez.
The cities are so close that the border is my morning running route when I'm in Juárez. You can see that the city just basically ends, then 50 meters of nothing, then the fence. There's a parallel highway on the US side and a parallel highway on the MX side.

Now that the Midterms are approaching, I see the Bernie fanatics out in full force.
What's wrong with the Bernie Sect is they have NO nuance, and do not seem to understand the realities of politics.
It’s been easy for Bernie in a tiny state of less than half a million white people, as long as he supported guns, he would win re-election over and over, without having to work very hard.
It's how he could keep his purity mostly intact.
He's not known to work well with others.
My issue with the Bernie crowd is the LIES they tell.

They spent the entire primary lying so badly about Hillary, so they could drive her poll numbers down and Bernie's up.

Let's start with the most interesting and compelling paper in the lot for me:

Q: Does lead impact fertility?

A: YES. More lead, les babies. Moderate reductions in lead exposure have demographically-significant fertility impacts. #NBERday nber.org/papers/w24607
This is in line with e.g. Flint's experience, where intense lead exposure created a sudden baby-bust. It's in line with medical research as well. The study design... is making the best of limited data that it can. #NBERday
