Things are heating up between House Oversight Dems and DOJ/Commerce: The committee threatened to move to a contempt vote for AG Barr and Sec. Ross next week if they didn't comply with subpoenas by yesterday for docs about the 2020 Census — and they didn't
Here's the letter DOJ sent yesterday to the committee defending its handling of the situation: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6142… They call the committee's contempt plan "premature" and say they've already turned over thousands of docs and made two officials available for testimony
The committee counters that much of the document production so far has involved info that was already public, and the agencies are refusing to turn over a narrow "priority" set of docs: "The letters last night were case studies in double-speak."
If the committee does vote to hold AG Barr and Sec. Ross in contempt, it would be the second such vote this year — House Judiciary voted to hold Barr in contempt for not turning over Mueller-related docs in May: buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil… (The full House has not voted on that yet)
House Oversight Republicans are siding with DOJ and Commerce in the brewing contempt fight. Statement from Rep. Jim Jordan's press sec: "Democrats are prematurely jumping to contempt, when it should be the last resort."
