Because i'm sick and tired of always pointing out the validity or logic behind Zack Snyder's vision of Superman & DCEU films, i'm going to disband what all detractors hide behind; the source material. Namely to prove their utter ignorance of it.
I can go into the Golden Age era, but they'll likely claim its outdated (its not. The Genesis of Superheroes is never outdated). I'm not using the Silver Age for obvious reasons bc it's not the end all, be all of Superman. Nah, i'm going to the Post Crisis reboot with MOS #1...
--Superman #1 (87), Adventures of Superman #424 and Action Comics #584 as the genesis. I'm not using just any examples here, but ones that happen often enough that they can be considered part/parcel of the character.
I'll start with one of the most controversial but UNTRUE accusation of Zack's Superman; causing collateral damage. Contrary to popular opinion, DCEU Superman doesn't deliberately cause collateral damage. His comic counterpart is another story entirely.
Causing damage and weaponizing the environment is as true to the character as his ability to fly but god forbid Zack let property be damaged (not by Superman tho) in his adaptation and then everyone pretends it's something he did for the sake of doing it. Such juvenile mindsets.
Just look at Superman giving a shit about collateral damage. Look at him totally not causing it. Its almost as if the guy loves breaking things in the comics. But the more careful DCEU!Superman gets hated for supposedly doing it. Of course no one cared when he did do it in BvS
Then let's talk about the depiction of destruction in the source material ppl "know" so much and which Zack Snyder "doesn't get".
Superman #1 (1987) the building Superman and Metallo are fighting in crumbles.
Adventures #424; terrorists attack a building and it crumbles
AC #959
Action Comics #700, Adventures #479, Superman #4, and Action Comics #959
How about death?
Adventures #478 by Jurgens; villain murders lots of people & millions dead by the end.
Superman #59 by Jurgens; cop gets shot thru the face
Action Comics #670; the state of Metropolis after a battle but remember, "Zack doesn't understand the tone of the material"
Let's see, in Superman #4, a mass shooter opens fire on a cafe and kills multiple people, including... A KID!!! But remember, even though nothing this extreme happened in DCEU, it's "too dark".
You thought that was it? Nope. The mass shooter commits multiple mass shootings, all with Superman powerless to get there in time. You know, for those who think being "experienced" means shit. Supes was a 3 year veteran here. Just look at the state of the environment at the end.
An alien invader destroys Coast City, killing more than 7 million men, women & children. Survivors are picked off by the villain. This was exciting to readers. The same who suddenly decided the death of 5,000 and destruction of less than 0.1% of Metropolis was "destruction porn"
Now, lets talk about the (mostly pacifist) DCEU!Superman being supposedly "violent" bc he dared to protect himself and others. Because the comic version is totally not violent. Because a man who punches things by default isn't using violence. Not to mention, his opinions on it.
God forbid he lose his cool bc someone threatened his mother or was wasting his time by blowing stuff up in his face while her life chances slip away on a timer. Nope, the comic version is totally not prone to angry outbursts or losing his cool without those excuses. Oh wait!
Superman's personality. Comic Superman is prone to feelings of inadequacy, frustration & depression (right from Man of Steel #1 & it goes through all of his history). What ppl with less intellect derisively call being "mopey" or brooding but wise ones call being human.
This tendency to fall into a deep state of sadness is FAR more intrinsic to the character than the bullshit "smiling", joker gas vaping, kryptonite botox using, facial muscle pull suffering farce that's clouded popular culture.
As a result of some unforeseen consequences of his action that cost lots of people their lives, Superman's faith is shaken and he starts wondering torturously the point of the good he does and whether it matters or something else has already pre-ordained it and nothing matters.
Another story of unforeseen cosequences and a depressed Superman (S:MOS #16 & Superman #72). A case of domestic abuse where he could easily intercede but the last abused woman he helped ends up getting killed by her husband when his actions inspire her to leave the marriage.
For all the "cat in trees" fans and enthusiasts; a PSA from the comics.
Oh yea, and a panel of batman using guns to destroy some childhoods for good measure.
