Now for the "Zack's approach was wrong, Superman shouldn't have been deconstructed" kool aid drinkers, a reality check. This approach had become consistent with Superman comics since Man of Steel miniseries for 2+ decades, he was just the first to bring it to the film medium.
Superman was deconstructed starting from that mini. From a powerful being considering himself wholly human, to Clark being a career driven reporter, to him struggling with the idea he's not supposed to find love with Lois. Seriousness IS the norm for the comics, not exception.
Think the films are too serious or Supes is depressing or put off by Clark frowning instead of looking like he huffed Joker gas? What do you think the comics were doing then? That was the character as written since '86. He failed a lot, blamed himself a lot, was depressed a lot.
So much so you can open a random comic from '86 - 2000s and you'll see him being sad. He was being deconstructed after growing so powerful, failure was virtually becoming unheard of. He lost his first supervillain fight & almost got killed. He failed in most of his first missions
And every thing about him was torn down and built back up. A new Krypton, living parents, go getter Clark, Fat Lex, no Kandor, human brainiac, etc were all attempts to start over and guess what? It worked. Superman sold like hotcakes. That's what Zack brought to the table but nah
I guess ppl will rather cling to their jokerized idea of Superman than the character they claim to have been reading for yrs. Zack, like John Byrne before him, had the dubious honor of bringing the character into the modern age & they both started over from scratch to purist ire
And yet, the character was all the better from their serious approach. He sold better than ever, his more emotional humanity won fans and as soon as they were both removed from the character to please their detractors, Superman's image took a hit. History repeats if u never learn
