I think many of us didn't realise we had ADHD because we experience ADHD as it is, with overwhelming processing, choice paralysis, and a lack of control over where we focus, rather than ADHD as it is described by people who don't have it and who assume based off assumptions.
It's still talked about as if it's just one way it can manifest in young boys (even here it says 'parents' not 'family/friends/colleagues') which sucks for adult women with ADHD. Pretty much anyone who isn't a white middle-class masculine boy has to struggle to have it recognised
I've known people with clear ADHD symptoms get dismissed (by doctors!) cos it doesn't match what they think of as 'naughty boy syndrome'.
We really should give it a different name too, having Hyperactivity in the name is misleading for so many people who have it and leads them to assume they don't have ADHD they're just 'broken'/'lazy'/you get the picture.
