This is one of those examples where subtlety/nuance gets lost. Yes, the demonstration had value, no, it doesn't mean what you think it means. Kids didn't hack either election systems or an exact clone of an election system.
I don't know if it was "hype" so much as the impossibility of crafting a simple/clear message for something that is nuanced/complex. Election systems often have SQL injection vulns, and 11 year olds have enough skill to hack SQL injection vulns.
Election companies should be condemned for having one of the most trivial and best known vulns. But at the same time, it doesn't mean kids are hacking election systems.
