1/ It’s just the first night of #CodeCon2019 and already reps of major tech platforms have dodged a series of reasonable questions with ridiculous non-answers.
2/ The @YouTube CEO is sorry its failure to enforce its own rules hurt the victims, but won’t enforce them. The @instagram chief thinks it can better secure data by relying on its parent company, the serial offender @facebook.
3/ And the @awscloud boss compares the vast potential danger of facial recognition to that of a person using a knife, and is dying for federal regulation (which his lobbyists can water down and which would preempt stronger state laws).

The arrogance all around is breathtaking.

1/ Thread. Here’s one way to view the Facebook/Apple dispute. Say I own a chain of 100 popular grocery stores. It’s far from the biggest chain, but folks trust it. Dole uses my chain to test new items. It wants to pilot a new kind of canned fruit at 3 of my stores, and I say OK.
2/ But Dole deliberately ships the test product to *all* of my stores, not 3. Plus, it turns out that the nature of the product violates my policies that Dole has agreed to. So I ban the product. (Note: I am not referring to the real Dole here of course. This is a made-up Dole.)
3/ Dole’s reaction is to relabel the banned product and then ship it again to all my stores. This time, I ban all their products in that one category for one day. It disrupts their operations briefly, even though they remain on the shelves of my of my bigger competitor.

1/ Read this from @LaurenGoode, a fine, veteran reporter. She goes on to say that she’s *not* ready to conclude that her device(s) were listening in on her. But these “coincidences” are being reported more and more often. I hope some journalists are digging into them.
2/ We already know that the ad-targeting industry has no real scruples. We know that our phones and laptops and tablets have mics and cameras. And mics and cameras are now being installed all over many homes in “smart” devices. Lots of money could potentially be made by spying.
3/ I have zero proof of such spying. But if a thorough investigation showed that any ad or ad-tech companies were hijacking the mics or cameras on consumers’ devices, the backlash would be enormous. (Note: These views are all mine, not Lauren‘s.)

This is so wrong. Facebook, Google and others simply appropriate highly detailed, highly personal information about us without any action that could reasonably be called notice or permission. We need a federal law requiring that they ask first and offer to pay for it if need be.
And don’t be confused by the argument that you’re getting a “free” service in exchange for watching ads, like old-style TV or print. That would be a fair deal. It’s the secretive profiling, all over the Web, that must be banned. User permission & compensation should be required.
In other words, your private information should be viewed as private property, which you can sell, rent, or give away, if asked. In the U.S., we have 200 years of legal precedents on private property. Your data should be covered by those precedents.

At this moment, in California, DC and Brussels, major tech platforms are falsely lobbying that the surveillance of consumers across websites, apps and devices is necessary to fund the free Internet and journalism. This research is deeply problematic for their arguments.

Flying to Ottawa on US holiday to provide evidence to 14 nations‘ Parliaments regarding data privacy, platform accountability and impact on democracy. For more than a year, Facebook and its CEO have obfuscated answering challenging questions from many of these same leaders.
I’ve documented across now multiple years of Twitter threads a number of the details which Facebook refuses to come clean on as it tries to lobby and intimidate its way out of tough government and press scrutiny. Here is one thread:
At the first and only previous meeting of this International Grand Committee, @Nelelijnen stated, ”Facebook sent its cat” despite the many requests for CEO. And the Facebook who appeared, Lord Allan, didn’t quite understand the Flemish phrase. Quite an exchange.

So over the past few days I've been tweeting a lot about historic vital statistics. That's because I have been very irritated about something for a long time.

There's not, to my knowledge, any way to download a big dataset of state births and other fertility indicators.
Even CDC doesn't produce estimates early than 2003 which could be used to calculate a total fertility rate. Their online tool doesn't reach back before 1995. Old vital statistics reports are a pain to go through.
@ipums @nhgis has been kind enough to upload vital statistics data 1915-present, which has been INVALUABLE for my project, but 1) it's in tons of year-specific files and 2) it only goes back to 1915!

Meeting you,@alexisohanian, and @hueypriest at that party was one part of the catalyst that got me into the tech industry. I met REAL people who built an awesome thing that people LOVED. You brought tech into a reality for me in a way that my non-famous nerd friends did not. 2/10
I quit being a flight attendant to attend a full-stack bootcamp a few years after that Super Bowl party, and am now doing what I love as a woman in #tech. @alexisohanian, you helped inspire me, and I am hoping you're willing to inspire more #womenintech 3/10
