i have some theories about the ways in which visual art is fundamentally different from music, which is fundamentally different from art that is word based (literature, poetry, etc.). for this reason i dont feel i can make assertions about the nature of music or literature. [...]
i very strongly feel that mans natural response to beauty plays a huge role in the visual arts, and that this response is largely universal. cultural beauty preferences vary but only to a certain degree. most cultures agree flowers are nicer to look at than human feces. [...]
im wondering if people who deal primarily in music or literature (or poetry) could weigh in on how they see this reflected in their own fields. are musical patterns and relationships reflecting a universal ideal of "good music"? or are they culturally constructed, in ur opinion
in literature and poetry are these forms and ideas that are intrinsically beautiful and good or do you see this as also reflecting peoples cultural and social situations. does this question apply to literature / poetry?
it took me a long time to really penetrate into the fundamental essence of the visual arts so, i figure this will never happen for me in other fields (i chose my path, basically) so im curious what insight people have if theyve dedicated themselves to other art forms. hit me
