No one disputes that an atheist can be a moral realist. The point is that that is like being a realist about dogs without being a realist about atoms. Since dogs are made of atoms, materially, the position is always incoherent. But it can be done.
The analogy is not precise since morality depends on God in a more direct way, viz. to ground its normative character—the moral 𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 whereby one 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 or 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙩 do certain acts. Lacking this, you get “morality,” a husk of morality.
Lacking a transcendent normative ground, every naturalistic moral system can be defeated by “Why should I obey your rules?”
