The key ingredient for a B2B SaaS startup to succeed is deep domain knowledge. The most lucrative way to get deep domain knowledge is to build software via a services model for several companies in the same domain in roughly the same areas. 2/

Typically you will do this for mid-market, or enterprise customers, who you already know and who already trust you. Alternatively you can do complete workflow solutions for an SMB, that will deliver substantial value to the SMB. 3/

Ideally you will be curious, build strong relationships, find problems that can be solved with products, find problems that are common across multiple organisations, and build an “audience” of possible buyers in those companies, over a period of time. 4/

Build up your product on the side along with a prospect/customer, using very limited resources, while continuing to farm your services business. And once your product gets the first few customers, switch to selling the product for larger % of your time. 5/

B2B enterprise sales cycles are super long, and you would have learnt enterprise sales along the way. Do make sure that when you sell product, you say “NO” to requests that extend the product too much. 6/

Next step is to earn enough from the product to cover a core team of devs + 1 sales + 1 support + 1 mktg person.
