I have a feeling that no matter where you fall on this show, the vast majority of opinions will fall on two extremes and nuance will be taken very personally.

I like it, and I'm not bothered by the realism. Honest representation is important. But I'm not entirely convinced it's presented in a healthy way. It seems to glorify some unhealthy behaviors, at least based on the pilot.

Most of the writing is great, but some if it falls flat. There's some condescension here. More than a little "how do you do, fellow kids" stuff. I'd be interested to know the ages of the writing staff. The pandering is quite strong in some parts.

And I'll be completely honest: some of it is over-acted. There are exchanges of dialogue that made me cringe. It felt like they were trying too hard. That being said, Zendaya and Hunter Schaefer are quite good at carrying the show.

Do I love that a trans actress is one of the main characters? Yes, very much so, and for that reason, alone, I'll be tuning-in next week. I would have watched anyway, but I particularly appreciate that her character is a young woman, first and foremost. Refreshing.

Anyway... overall, it's a good show, and I think once it gets the past the need to levy shock value, it could grow comfortable in its own skin and be a classic.
