Next up is "the 7 deadly presentation sins" by Andrew (@coatsy) and Samantha (@BlitzBooks) Coates. Hopefully I'll pick up a few pointers for my inevitable #NDCOslo presentation when I get back to @TeamCodify!
Almost all issues in a performance are caused by either lack of preparation, or lack of previous exposure to pressure situations
Effective practice means repeating an activity until you get it right more times than you got it wrong
Three stages of learning involved in mastering an activity
It's no good to get it right at home if you can't reproduce the performance in public
Practice in front of family, friends and colleagues to create an environment with pressure
Don't draw attention to mistakes. The audience doesn't care and might not even notice
Don't correct mistakes if they can be ignored
Pay attention to speed - adrenaline makes us speak / play faster than usual
"nothing new on race day" - don't alter the conditions from how you practiced
Don't show dissatisfaction, even afterwards
Don't acknowledge interruptions or distractions (e.g coughing)
Acknowledge the audience
Have a defined structure to your presentation
Slides are supporting material, not a representation of what you are saying. It should be possible to remove the slides entirely in many circumstances
Sometimes it's OK to read the slides, but this should be planned
The audience is not necessarily at your level - don't go too deep to fast
Avoid brittle demos - have a backup plan, e.g. screen captures or a known good VM snapshot
Keep it as simple as possible. Avoid demonstrating a large, complex subject all at once
Don't wing it - prepare
Don't improvise - stick to your prepared script
Provide context to your demonstrations
I wasn't expecting to be taught to sing at a tech conference!
