Back from a hearing on blocking the proposed merger between T-Mobile and Sprint:

@NewYorkStateAG's assistant announced amended complaint ahead with more states joining: Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Nevada.

No sign of @TheJusticeDept.

Trial Oct. 7th. @CourthouseNews
T-Mobile's attorney George Cary found it "very unlike" the DOJ would intervene in the case.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero quipped that the Justice Department was "the elephant not in the room."
*very unlikely*

* regret the typo
Sprint's attorney Steven Sunshine called a settlement with the DOJ "imminent" in its own antitrust investigation.

"We're here," Sunshine said. "We're ready to go, and we'll deal with the DOJ when it happens."
Sunshine's opposing counsel in California is named... Paula Blizzard.

Judge Marrero had fun with the dueling surnames, which gave him an opportunity to raise the issue of possible "conflicts of interest."
Marrero once sat on the board of New York Telephone Company, which later combined with New England Telephone and Telegraph.

Through complicated subsequent transactions involving NYNEX and Bell Atlantic, Judge Marrero came to collect a pension from Verizon to this day.
Noting that this pension is "fixed and fully vested," Marrero said that ethics counsel advised him that this would not present a conflict, but he disclosed it in the interest of transparency and his professional obligation.

Fun anecdote.
The Justice Department was “the elephant not in the room” on Friday, but it may be close to a settlement in a deal that could whittle down the Big Four to the Big Three.
