I'm gonna do a small thread on: Why did I coin #bropenscience?

The shortest answer to the question is: because it’s amusing and seems to upset exactly the right people, while also drawing attention to behaviours and ideas that harm #openscience and its adoption in deep ways.
The bro-iest, wannabe macho-est (given context of course — we’re talking about scientists, so macho/bro-ism will manifest in very specific ways) people seem to get upset.
And that’s great, they are the ones that probably need to take a step back and understand that their aggressiveness and even their overrepresentation can push people away.
Their behaviour won’t stop people who believe in #openscience from doing it who have the conviction and resources to, but it might nonetheless fracture the open science community, create negative vibes, etc. The opposite of openness!
If the idea of an open science community or movement upsets you inherently: oh, dear, this is probably not for you.

I care about open science and have practised it in every project I have ever worked on to the best of my abilities.
The fact my making a pun and criticism about certain vocal people’s behaviours by calling them #bropenscience often results in replies of “why do you hate #openscience?” is telling.
#Bropenscience NEEDS to be called out for #openscience to fulfil its goal. It will fail as a movement and community without people/us making equity, diversity and inclusivity efforts.

Because this is what happens if not: we recapitulate existing biases!

Who are we opening science up to if not those who historically have had less access to it?

One of the core tenets of #openscience is: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion.

Further reading on the #bropenscience hashtag on many reasons why #openscience needs to take Equity, Diversity, Inclusion very seriously and I will try and write more off Twitter and link to it if people are interested.
