I think if you are going to go this big you have to go bigger. It makes a certain sense to suggest that all humans suffer from 1) severe my-side bias; 2) a tendency to default to binary thinking. 1/
I'm not a follower of Levi-Strauss, but if you want SOME evidence that ALL thought consists of binary oppositions, he provides. Binary thinking is a common cognitive default for the species. So that it is normal in Western philosophy does not seem self-evidently noteworthy. 2/
The conjunction of 1 & 2 tends to produce an US = good/NOT-US = bad/evil frame. But here we have an interesting chicken-egg issue. Think of Henri Tajfel's minimal group paradigms. That is, the tendency of any social group to become my-side valorized. 3/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimal_g…
Obviously 1 & 2 would tend to suggest the likelihood of Tajfel's results. But what if it's the latter that more explains the former? That is, our instinctive my-side groupishness is such a powerful cognitive bias it tends to infect our conceptual schemes? 4/
Any significant grouping of THINGS (concept) tends to be US vs. THEM valorized. That is, our human disinclination to form 'minimal groups' means not that every single concept gets dragged into the Grand Game of US vs. THEM, yet major categories do. 5/
That is, the anthropological Ur-binary is US/NOT-US (US vs. THEM) and it semi-explains the human cognitive bias in favor of finding/constructing good-bad valorized binaries in all conceptual domains. Please note: I do not really believe this. 6/
