A follow-up on yesterday's thread: none of the people who were happy to yell at me for thinking about mermaids when the world's on fire have been willing to promise not to consume any fictional media until things are better.
Honestly, I'm glad. Humans need stories. Needing stories is part of what keeps us human. My cat doesn't need a bedtime story to sleep sweetly. She just sleeps.
But if you're not willing to give up stories, please stop trying to harass storytellers into giving up our ability to tell them. Don't wander into book Twitter and yell at us for worrying about mermaids.
Criticize us, absolutely! The stories we tell should make you see how the world should be, not only the way it is. They should give you heroes to look up to and villains to abhor. They should teach you new songs to sing.
So call out racism! Call out casual use of slurs, whatever their origins! Make us do better! But don't tell us that doing what may well be the actual oldest job in the world is useless because things are bad.
Things have always been bad. People told stories during the Black Death. While the sky burned in Pompeii. As Atlantis sank. Things have always been bad, storytellers have always told stories, and sometimes those stories have helped to save us.
Please. Just let us work.
