Across the world, Islamic and Christian conquerors burnt vast libraries. From the Mayans, to the Library of Alexandria to that of Nalanda, all were destroyed. Since "One Book" was enough.

In fact, the sense of history of ancient Indians is remarkable. Even histories of families are precisely traced in Haridwar. The Puranas and Itihasas are rich sources, many with precise embedded astronomical dating, since India was far ahead of the world in astronomical science.
@RajivMessage has been working on Swadeshi Indology. We really need a coming together of indigenous history from primary sources discarding the entire phase of Western Indological history for a new chronology. But this needs sustained institutional efforts over time.
With the destruction of major libraries and massacres of scholars with Islamic rule, both science and history took a blow. Like a tortoise, civilization went into retreat. But still immense data exists for reconstruction.
