Today's topic is "unfortunate animal engravings from 1794" starting with my personal favourite.

WRITER: so I need a shark for this book

WRITER: make sure you get the potato sack body right

ARTIST:what I'm hearing is you want a human face with an eyepatch on a dog

ARTIST: one servant of the horned king and harbinger of death coming right up

ARTIST: how hard can it be to do this from scratch
WRITER: it's a fox ape. Like the bear ape. But a fox.

WRITER: make sure it has lots of flaps

WRITER: so as I understand it the difference between a Roebuck and a Hart is that the buck is super fancy

ARTIST: yea I think I heard that somewhere
WRITER: do either of us know what a chameleon looks like

ARTIST: if we did it wouldn't be a very good chameleon would it

WRITER: good point lol
WRITER: make it look like my aunt

ARTIST: are you sure

WRITER: lol yes it's a thing we have going on

ARTIST: you do know I'm charging you for this, don't you
WRITER: I am 90% sure rhinos have full plate mail
WRITER: so a unicorn is a creature of good

ARTIST: like this?

WRITER: no not like that at all what is wrong with you
WRITER: the thing about the lion is, they are very dramatic creatures

ARTIST: yea, mhmm, I can see it in my mind's eye
WRITER: so there's this fish trapped in an eternal scream

ARTIST: mood. Yea I got it, don't worry about it.
WRITER: and then the sea tortoise
ARTIST: do you mean a turtle
WRITER: who is the writer here I know what I said
WRITER and so we come to the classification of dragons
ARTIST: I can't draw dragons
WRITER: can you draw a chicken?
ARTIST: yea
WRITER: can you draw a snake?
ARTIST: yea
WRITER: then you can draw a dragon can't you

so, way back in c.14th century France, a knight called Richard de Macaire assassinated someone and buried the body in the woods, to which the only witness was the victim's Dog...
we can all agree that Macaire was what is historically known (amongst more scholarly types) as a bit of an evil twat
the Dog stayed by the grave (good boy) for days before wandering back to town and alerting a Friend of the deceased by barking incessantly until someone came to figure out "what the hell the wretched Dog wants"

Diversity scholarships are for those who need them and to increase representation :)

Diversity scholarships given based "on merit" will always benefit the same type of people (+ 1 or 2 outliers, I know I know), which raises a silly bar.

@breckcs Many of us have embraced microservices. But are your microservices like homogeneous bricks, or like an uneven stone wall?

In either case though, there are cracks between each individual service. Managing the space between, & the people/orgs is the biggest challenge. #QConLondon
Each service is its own failure domain, which is a blessing and a curse.

Will k8s solve the problem for us? No, it won't. Orchestration will manage the boxes, but what we put inside matters.

When Taehyung first gets into the accident, there’s nothing.

He feels nothing, he hears nothing and he sees nothing. And once the shock disappears, there’s pain. Blinding, unbearable pain and he tries to scream but he can’t hear his own voice over the chaos around him.

I've had some folks ask for tips on how to moderate a panel event, so here's a thread!

Note that this is based on my experiences moderating and participating on panels at meetups and info events in the tech industry.
Before you agree to moderate a panel, look at the make up of the panel participants. Are you yet another white person on an all-white panel? Or yet another man on an all-male panel?

If that's the case, tell the organizers that needs to be fixed or you won't participate.
If you've been asked to moderate, that means you have a lot of power in this situation, and you need to use it to help empower other people. This applies both to deciding if you should moderate, as well as helping the participants during the event.

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
