European Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyn speaks out on Brexit.

We all know that we want you to remain but i know how facts are.

VDL: "I think it is very important that the way things go on... I hope for a good development but in case we are going to have a Brexit, I am convinced it is crucial the tone and attitude with which Brexit happens"

VDL: "Brexit is not the end of something, it is the beginning of future relations...although i still hope you Remain.

"It is in our interest to have you sort things out. We do have agreement and we do have the backstop. "

NEW: EU sources insist that rules that mean smoked kipper producers in the Isle of Man must use "plastic ice pillow" when sending to UK, as made famous by Boris Johnson, are BRITISH rules and not Brussels' rules. 1/
This is a national competence. The EU does not regulate sales of smoked fish to consumer, only sale of fish from business to business. The Isle of Man example is outside scope of EU food safety rules.

I am told smoked kippers to individual customers through the post is "entirely a UK" matter.

My eye was caught by this cut-out of Churchill in the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the plaque saying he called for a European army. 1
I had my doubts but he did give a speech in Council of Europe putting forward a motion calling for a unified European army to face down Soviet Union 2

1/ Commission President candidate Ursula von der Leyen fleshes out her views on Brexit in the EU Parliament this evening: 'I am a strong believer in Remain. I am a Remainer. We didn't want any of this to happen but the result [of negotiations] was good.
2/ 'My basic position is that if the UK needs more time we think it would be a good idea to have an extension, because not just thinking about the economic consequences but also the relations between our countries would be affected in such a catastrophic way by a No Deal Brexit.'
3/ 'I really hope Brexit doesn't happen. It's not the end of anything, it's the way in which we work together. It sets the tone of our future cooperation which will have to happen. But we need to do this with grace, with patience and we need to accompany the UK in this process.'

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, nominated to be the next President of the European Commission, has called for the creation of a European superstate. "My aim is the United States of Europe..." She has also called for the creation of a European Army.
Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell is a well-known supporter of the mullahs in Iran. Borrell has also said that he hopes Britain will leave the EU because it is an impediment to the creation of a European superstate.

Von der Leyen - if confirmed as new European Commission President - will not bring winds of change. A Merkel loyalist, true Christian Democrat, conservative europhile. She’s thought likely to try to promote more women though. As for #Brexit .. /1
Remember the Commission negotiated on behalf of EU member states. Commission President doesn’t have legal power to change that negotiating mandate /2
Since U.K. gov signed off on the Withdrawal Agreement back in November, the only ones who can change the content are EU national leaders, not the Commission /3

1) It’s 7.30 pm in Brussels and the political declaration on the future EU - U.K. relationship - scheduled to be pretty much finished today is not yet complete. Negotiations are ongoing
2) The PM is coming to Brussels tomorrow to discuss the text. She’s expected to push for some sense of her Chequers plan for #Brexit to be recognisable in the document
3) But now she’s not the only party doing the pushing. Spain is making demands over Gibraltar and France is fighting for fishing rights in U.K. waters after Brexit

European Commission not impressed w/May’s letter. Will say, inter alia, citizens rights ‘is not a matter of "flexibility and creativity". It's a matter of creating cast-iron guarantees for the rights to be protected.’
