1) It’s 7.30 pm in Brussels and the political declaration on the future EU - U.K. relationship - scheduled to be pretty much finished today is not yet complete. Negotiations are ongoing
2) The PM is coming to Brussels tomorrow to discuss the text. She’s expected to push for some sense of her Chequers plan for #Brexit to be recognisable in the document
3) But now she’s not the only party doing the pushing. Spain is making demands over Gibraltar and France is fighting for fishing rights in U.K. waters after Brexit
4) The PM meets with European Commission President Juncker tomorrow. It’s thought unlikely that meeting alone can solve all issues.
5) An EU source describes the PM’s visit to Brussels tomorrow as ‘an important step but not the last one’ to get the Brexit texts finalised
6) Big question then is: Will the text be ready for Friday to give EU leaders at least a deal to digest it ahead of the seal the deal Brexit summit on Sunday?
7) There is a strong possibility that Sunday Brexit summit could turn out to be a lot more dramatic (and longer) than the planned photo-op
8) Not dissimilar maybe to the EU’s all-night Greek debt crisis when Greece’s PM was brought into the room of eurozone leaders to argue his case then sent away again in order to allow them to decide amongst themselves what to do. Could the PM find herself in a similar position?
9) High drama and a fight for ‘U.K. Brexit interests’ face to face with EU leaders on Sunday would certainly help Theresa May at home. Just as Macron fighting for fishing rights and Sanchez stamping foot over Gibraltar could boost those leaders’ slumping poll ratings..
10) Could that not be the long-night, high drama Brexit moment with (presumably a planned) late night/early morning bleary-eyed but triumphant resolution with EU leaders that would provide the boost at home the PM needs? We watch and wait ..
