My eye was caught by this cut-out of Churchill in the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the plaque saying he called for a European army. 1
I had my doubts but he did give a speech in Council of Europe putting forward a motion calling for a unified European army to face down Soviet Union 2
"The Assembly... calls
for the immediate creation of a unified European Army subject to proper European democratic control and
acting in full co-operation with the United States and Canada.”

This is in 1950. 7 yrs before EEC, forebear to EU, was set up. So it is not an EU army he is calling for

Winston does though praise the Schuman plan , important for founding of EEC, in his address to council of europe (not an EU institution)
Churchill's support for United States of Europe is much discussed but this army stuff was a new one on me.

Inclined to think he just wanted the biggest possible deterrent to the Soviets but don't know.
Boris Johnson explains away Churchill's call for United States of Europe by saying Winston supported it to bring peace to continent but didn't want Britain to join.
And no doubt some in UK will be angered that Winnie is being used for "EU propaganda" in the European Parliament cafe.

Especially as he is officially history's greatest Briton
So lets resolve this. What was Winston? VOTE NOW
