The most frequent question I've heard over the last two years is, "what gives you hope?" -- so I've been using @polleverywhere to ask people that same question after I give a talk! I've categorised 550 responses over the last 6 months. Guess what's #1? KIDS!
It's also important to note that 83% of the responses relate to people; 8% to faith (with most but not all of those coming from the 2 out of 7 faith-based audiences included in the sample) and 7% relate to science and technology.
For me, this reinforces how important talking, interacting with other people and sharing inspirational stories of what others are doing, individually and collectively, is -- because that's what gives us hope. ted.com/talks/katharin…
And without hope -- a rational hope, based on a recognition of how bad it is and how much work it will take to fix it -- we will be a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom.
