In all seriousness, I’ve been gathering resources for years to write some kind of article on the SE. One of my points was going to be that it seemed like this was the case, probably sparked by me hearing that it was true 20 years ago & not remembering until now.
The point still stands that “Lucas’ Original Vision” version of these Academy Award nominated movies just happened to correspond with VFX techniques he wanted to try for future movies. The originals are now preserved as beta versions of the prequels.
Instead of shooting test footage and seeing what ILM could do with it, Lucas used Fox’s preservation project to see how little work he could do on set to accommodate for VFX. If ILM could put a dinosaur behind footage Lucas shot 20 years before without him planning around it...
...then surely he wouldn’t have to do too much in production to be able to shape Phantom Menace in post-production as he willed.

Looking at my notes, the concept i came up with for the article a few months ago still stands, because even if Lucas says something is true doesn’t mean it’s the only truth.
