Ursula von der Leyen wins 383 of 733 votes (327 against) and is thus elected European Commission president. A narrow win: 51% and probably reliant on vote of populists like Poland's PiS.
(51% of MEPs, 52% of those who voted - compared with 56% for Juncker in 2014)
And there we have it: it seems Ursula von der Leyen may owe her win to a last-minute phone call to Warsaw by Angela Merkel

To the English reading security bubble. There is a lot of noise on German twitter and in the media regarding the nomination of German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen as the candidate for the position of the next president of the European Commission. /2 #EUCO #vonderleyen
Quite of a lot of these comments, especially by the coalition partner @spdde are defamatory. the reasoning is mostly along the lines, that no one in Brussels knows her, that she mismanaged the #Bundeswehr and so on and so forth. Let me give you some /3
facts about her almost 6 years in office. Under her leadership,
*Germany saw an unprecedented increase in its defense budget
*Germany took the lead in NATO's efforts to deter Russia

In case it's useful, a few points about Ursula von der Leyen as seen from Berlin:
- Yes, her defense ministry is seen as scandal-plagued, with major equipment problems & a handful of sleaze allegations.
- However the gigantic apparatus was long this way & a known as a political "ejector seat" for legions of ambitious pols. No one expected her to hold on this long (since 2013) but she's paid a high price in popularity (2nd from bottom in latest minister ranking).
- A political moderate from Merkel's CDU, she was staunchly loyal to her during the 2015-16 refugee influx. But she cornered the chancellor as labor minister with a drive for boardroom gender quotas after industry failed during a decade of voluntary measures to make headway.
