far-right Polish thugs beating up a girl, in the name of "family values" and "Christianity"
I should explain that this was during the first Pride march to be held in Białystok, a city that has a big far right contingent though of course there are many other kinds of people too. Organized "kibole", football fans, threw stones at marchers and at police, and beat people up
Polish Episcopate has condemned the violence though it seems at least one parish priest approved.
Government, which has tacitly encouraged the far-right and is openly homophobic - threatening language about LGBT was their central theme in recent EU election campaign - hasn't said much yet.
The independent media and all of the opposition have expressed outrage and condemned the violence.
There are plenty of good people in Poland who don't want any of this to be happening, but they aren't in charge. Don't stereotype the whole country because of these scenes; treat them as a reminder of the importance of politics
