Things I’ve learned from living in Toledo this summer & interning at a newspaper there: a thread (in no particular order)
A gallon of milk, bought at the correct retailer, can cost as little as 99 cents.
Pretty much everything in Toledo is a 15-minute drive from the Old West End.
Getting around without a car is nearly impossible.
Normal people are actually overwhelmingly willing to talk to you if you randomly source them at a non-controversial event... maybe because they aren’t worried about endangering their potential future political ambitions (the eternal struggle of my YDN career).
The Midwest is actually really cool & super overlooked by the rest of the country. (Also psssst...... a lot of midwestern towns & cities have plenty of jobs that are just waiting to be filled.)
You can find people in Downtown Toledo exclusively when the Mud Hens are playing.
Traffic in Toledo only exists surrounding the Franklin Park Mall.
Also, I’m pretty sure every road in the entire city is under construction.
Unions are important.
I am not built to work an office job. Not in my 20s, at least.
I can only write under pressure.
Print journalism is dying, but it’s so so so important that we somehow keep local journalism alive regardless, especially in communities that the national media never have and likely never will cover well or extensively.
People will get mad over the smallest things in your articles. Sometimes it’s justified, but sometimes it’s just inevitable.
It’s sometimes hard to decipher whether a man is being creepy or just exercising a bit of Midwestern friendliness.
The Toledo Museum of Art is an actual hidden gem. And admission is free!
Lake Erie has had actual toxic algae in the past that rendered the entire water supply unusable for three days??????
