We now hear from @KevanJonesMP about the need to reduce the number of detentions under the Mental Health Act. He welcomes the Independent Review - 'it is important to recognise that things have changed... our attitudes over the last few years have changed'
@KevanJonesMP He adds that Georgi's story raised by @JohnnyMercerUK is important, as it shows how when we put people at the heart of their treatment, the Act can work.
@KevanJonesMP @JohnnyMercerUK 'We haven't put the policy in place to support people in the community. It's about money... but it's also about pathways and how people get in to the mental health system'.
He also highlights the need for social care and the important work being done by @SCappg. 'If we are going to put that wraparound care in place for individuals, it's got to be joined up, it's got to be integrated [with social care].'
@SCappg It's not just about the money, he adds. 'We need clear policy... we need housing. One issue is when people come out of inpatient units, there aren't any places for them'. Clear case for clinicians and local authorities to work together.
@SCappg We're now hearing from @SteveReedMP who introduced Seni's Law to Parliament last year.
@SCappg @SteveReedMP One recommendation from the Independent Review is on reducing the disproportionate number of BAME people affected by the Act, as well as improving their experience of treatment. Steve talks passionately about Seni's story and improving BAME people's experiences in MH services.
@SCappg @SteveReedMP We're now hearing from @ACunninghamMP about the APPG on Social Work and the role of social workers in the Mental Health ACT e.g. as an Approved Mental Health Professional
@SCappg @SteveReedMP @ACunninghamMP He goes on to discuss the recent Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act and how it should not have been a political discussion between the parties, but work between lawmakers and the people who are affected by this piece of legislation.
