Our report on LT Robert S. Mueller's heroism in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, has struck a chord with so many of our readers. We have received more comments on this report than on any other report that we have published. look.substack.com
In December 1968, 24 year old Marine 2LT Robert Mueller was in charge of a rifle platoon of about 40 men. They were based in the mountainous jungle highlands in the far north of South Vietnam, adjacent to the DMZ. [DMZ pockmarked with bomb craters.]
Here is another view of the DMZ. North Vietnam is on the far side of the river. The DMZ was a 2 km strip of no man's land that separated North and South Vietnam. It was used as a sanctuary by the North Vietnamese Army. The 1954 Geneva Convention prohibited the US from entering.
The North Vietnamese army units in this region had constructed an elaborate set of bunkers in the hills. It was dense jungle. The NVA was well equipped and trained (unlike the Vietcong, in the southern delta region). Here is what the area looks like. [Quang Tri Province]
Mueller's mission was to seek out and engage NVA in this area. His job was a part of a six-month campaign to clear Quang Tri Province of NVA and assert US control over the area. This is what base camps for our Marines looked like then. [December 31, 1968, Operation Scotland II]
The terrain was extremely challenging. Often, the enemy would be very close, but invisible in the dense jungle.
Moving men and fire power took a long time. Often, the guys had to use ropes to climb up and down the mountainsides.
Frequent downpours made the climbs slippery and dangerous. And all the while, the NVA were lurking.
Mueller received a radio order that another platoon had gotten ambushed on a nearby hill. He was ordered to go to their position and engage the enemy that had ambushed the unit. Mueller and his unit had to go down through a ravine and then go up the nearby hill. It took hours.
When Mueller arrived, many Marines lay wounded on the hillside. NVA opened up on him. Many more men went down. Men started running out of ammo.
In the thick of the fight, Mueller left a safe position to go down a bluff and rescue two of his men who were wounded and trapped by NVA. He made two trips down the bluff to do this.
This is what Mueller was doing when he was 24.
Mueller received a military award for his actions in the battle. But another dangerous engagement followed a few months later.
Mueller and his unit were ambushed while on patrol in Quang Tri. The NVA were in their face.
The firefight was intense. Mueller took an AK-47 round straight through his thigh, but kept on fighting and directing his men. His citation for this action says Mueller's actions won the battle.
The photo shows Mueller receiving his commendation from his regimental commander, "Stormy" Sexton. We love the fact that both Trump and Mueller have had a "Stormy" in their past.}
We have detailed Mueller's Vietnam experience in our recent report at the newsletter and we invite you to read it. look.substack.com (no paywall). Anybody who was expecting fireworks in Mueller's testimony never studied the man. His life is one of quiet devotion to duty.
Mueller's missions in Vietnam were successful. Mueller's mission as Special Counsel was also successful. Mueller was not a "Rambo" in Nam and he was not a reality tv star in the hearing. Shame on people who wanted a "performance."
We find it hard to imagine two more different people than Trump and Mueller.
We push back with facts. look.substack.com
