When someone says this, it is never *all* they’re doing.
I’m just asking a question about whether you’re an equal human being, just observing some data.

No other motive.

I’m definitely not contributing to a centuries-long social atmosphere wherein you, a brilliant human, now have to waste your brilliance simply proving your humanity.
Maybe it’s not “you’re not allowed to ask that question.”

Maybe it’s “that question has historically only ever been used to support or expand bigotry and injustice, while relying at all times on debunked quackery, and thus asking it will naturally raise a well-earned skepticism”
Quillette just last week published a glowing description of shambling daydrunk racist haystack Boris Johnson as a Germanic “ubermensch,” praising him specifically for his favorable Aryan phrenology, but yeah for sure they’re just asking scientific questions.
But really the biggest argument against this bullshit “we’re just asking the questions that are not allowed to be asked” claim is that those are the questions that have always been asked, forever, when are we going to stop asking these dumb demeaning energy draining questions?
There has never been a time in our history where we haven’t been constantly asking these questions that are allegedly “not allowed to be asked.”

Here’s the question that TRULY hasn’t been allowed to be asked until recently:

Why are you asking that question?
When people say that they are pushing back against a culture where “they aren’t allowed to ask” the questions they’re asking, and have always been asking, what they’re really pushing back against is the new question, only recently allowed:

Why are you asking that question?
They aren’t in favor of new questions. They’re opposed to new questions, especially when those new questions carry implicit criticisms of their old ones.

When they say “we’re not allowed” it’s criticism they mean. They mean “we’re now being criticized—and by the lesser-thans.”
Always watch for people who treat criticism as if it were oppression.
