Ok, so why use blogdown? Sure, there are several free options available to start your own blog (e.g., Medium). However, you generally can’t list your publications or other information easily on these services. Also, who knows where these services will be in a few years?

#rstats for YOU: Ever encountered an R error message like "Couldn't create memory segment of size 3.2G"? Also, more subtly, ever had some code run slowly in spite of little apparent reason? And ever wonder why data.table is so blindingly fast? This post will be on MEMORY. 1/n
So here goes Memory 101A. Memory (meaning RAM) is broken down into "words," typically 8 bytes long. One R numeric quantity will occupy one word. So, e.g. 1 gig of memory will hold a numeric vector of length only 125 million. 2/n
Each word has an "address," an ID number. If your installation of R includes the tracemem() function, you can use it to determine where in memory your R object is, e.g.

> x <- 1:500000
> tracemem(x)
[1] "<0x7fb1eab6e010>"

There are also some great point-and-click services available (e.g., Squarespace). However, you need to pay about $10 a month for these services, and they’re generally not well suited for academic webpages.

Tutorial on how to make a map using QGIS. I'll turn @SenhorRaposa's 2000 Vermont town data into a map showing by how much Gore outran Senator Jeffords (or vice versa) in every town.
Step 1: Download QGIS for your computer, which is available here:
qgis.org/en/site/foruse…
You'll also need some of Census' Tiger/Line County and County Sub shapefiles. The main download page for those is here:
census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/sh…

A direct link to the 2017 VT county sub shapefile is here: ftp://ftp2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TIGER2017/COUSUB/tl_2017_50_cousub.zip
I can't find a 2017 County file by state, so we'll use the 2009 verison here:

(We could always edit the 17 national county file in QGIS & create a 2017 VT-only county shapefile, but let's keep it simple.)
