Some advice I shared with those on the surgical journey for the last couple of days:

Being a surgeon is more than just doing surgery.

The detours in life lead you to where you’re meant to be.

Happiness is not about doing what you love but loving what you do.
Comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t look at others and their race. You are your own competition.

Grit, gratitude and grace/good luck.

Every specialty within medicine and surgery is noble. There is no one specialty better than another.
Life happens in the in-betweens. Between idealism and pragmatism. Between dreams and reality.

Perhaps we’re not meant to get everything we want in life so that we stay humble and human.

Let’s get our heads around this.

Stress is a short term response to a challenge. Resilience is a response to stress.

Burnout is a syndrome of chronic multifactorial occupational stress. It’s not a disease.

Mental illness is a psychiatric diagnosis.
The responses to each are different.

They are related but they’re not the same. Antidepressants is not the treatment for burnout. Yoga is not the treatment for mental illness.
Resilience is a dirty word just as burnout is. Resilience is a healthy response towards everyday stresses and burnout is a chronic workplace problem which require workplace intervention. Nothing wrong with these concepts. It’s how it’s been pushed, delivered and enforced.

A few #tonsillectomy myths:

1. You can’t have your tonsils out as an adult.

Incorrect. Tonsils can still be a locus of disease in the adult: recurrent tonsillitis, sleep apnoea, lymphoma, cancer, halitosis, etc. When tonsils are diseases, removal of them may be necessary.

2. Tonsillectomy is extremely painful.

Yes and no. Because of its location and anatomical position, it is uncomfortable. But there are surgical and anaesthetic techniques today to reduce that pain which your surgeon can discuss with you. It’s manageable.

3. You only eat jelly and ice cream for 2 weeks after a tonsillectomy.

Nope. You eat normal food. The more normal your diet the better. Good pain management in the operation and after that will help you with returning to normal diet.

I asked the local faculty, “What makes this place a centre of excellence?”

In unison they said “The people and the culture.”

Absolutely. The mark of greatness is not the facility or the set up. It’s always the people and the culture that make the difference.
You can have the best facilities in the world and feel totally unwelcomed and unappreciated. You can have the state of the art toys and feel like it’s a competition rather than collaboration. You can have the brightest minds at work who do not support each other.
You can have the best facilities but still have a toxic workplace culture that demeans people.

It’s people, people. The key to greatness is the people and the culture they build around them.

There is a video before Trump speaks. As the Trump on video says "we will make America great again," the crowd shouts GREAT AGAIN in time with him. Then there is a video of Matt Schlapp on CNN talking about "socialism."

In the last couple of days, I’ve seen several tweets referencing rumors about Kamala Harris’s sex life prior to her marriage. The implication of this smear campaign is plain: that a distinguished, intelligent, highly educated woman could only have gotten where she is via sex. 1/
At the risk of reinforcing gossip, I want to call out ANYONE on the left who feels the need to comment on Kamala’s - or any female candidate’s - private life. We are facing a critical election, and there’s plenty to talk about besides who someone might have f*cked. /2
Before, after, and while you post/share/repeat rumors, ask yourself: What’s my motivation for sharing this? Is this “story” important for understanding a candidate’s positions or qualifications? Will talking about this improve our politics or help people in need? /3

1. By February 2017 representatives of SCL Elections Ltd were claiming they had a database of 250 million Americans for the Trump Campaign.

What were the sources of those datasets.

I have some suggestions.
2/ We know from the email exchanges going on between AiQ and SCL Elections Ltd as far back as 2014 that a lot of work was going on in creating the platform and datasets to support “The Bolton Project” for the then Ambassador Bolton, now Trumps Nat Sec nominee.
