A year ago, a Trump supporting far right group named Patriot Prayer held a rally in Portland. These were the shirts many wore. Pinochet was the fascist dictator of Chile. RWDS (in red on sleeve) stands for "right wing death squads." And like Liz Cheney, they really hate commies.
One of Pinochet's favorite dictator tricks was to take his political opponents on the left on rides in helicopters and then push them to their deaths. These are the sorts of folks who'd gladly do Trump's bidding like this, were he to make similar threats. thestar.com/news/world/201…
Here's an excellent article on that August 2018 pro-Trump rally. Right wingers flew in from around the country for it. There were a total of about 400 of them facing off against over 1000 counter-protestors. theguardian.com/us-news/2018/a…

That said, I felt @cjane87 and @JonahNRO often talked around each other because they conceptualized "racism" in different ways. It would have been helpful, IMHO, to have an initial, ground-setting, conversation about what we mean when we use the words "racism" or "racist."
@cjane87 @JonahNRO My guess is that this opening, definitional conversation would've quickly encountered some stumbling blocks. And therein, I'd say, lay the rub for why the conservative movement and conservative intellectuals have had such difficulty engaging their critics on the question of race.

A group of fame seeking, right wing sociopaths are descending on Portland this weekend with the goal of provoking violence that, when videoed and shown on Fox, will lend credence to the GOP calls for the feds to crack down on leftists. oregonlive.com/crime/2019/08/…
Many of these right wing folks have been associated with Infowars. They make a living off selling conspiracy theories, fake supplements, and prepper kits to credulous white people.
This sort of grift is as old and 100% American as PT Barnum and Tom Sawyer. But the political and social stakes of this particular circus act/grift are much higher.

Ted Cruz, who wants to label people who oppose fascism "terrorists," seen here at a rally with far-Right Oath Keepers militia. Group was part of armed occupation of Malheur in 2016. Participants threatened to kill FBI agents and one militia member was killed by law enforcement.
Should be noted, that there was wide support within some sections of the GOP for the Malheur occupation, and various GOP officials played a role in the armed occupation in various capacities. opb.org/news/series/bu…
One of the most well known is Nevada Republican state legislator, Michele Fiore, close with Cruz and also the far-Right Oath Keepers militia. Fiore supported the Bundys during their armed standoff and played the role as a negotiator between the FBI and the militia during Malheur.

Despite zero evidence, growing from one Portland police tweet, the conspiracy theory (heavily pushed by far-Right trolls), that #Portland antifascist protesters mixed quick drying cement into over 700 milkshakes which were eaten, has made its way into the mainstream. A thread.
First some context. Since Joey Gibson and goons stepped onto the scene in 2017, we've seen collusion with law enforcement, the creation of a violent far-Right coalition that includes Proud Boys, militias, neo-Nazis and the Alt-Right, and mass community defense against them.
While not all of the far-Right groups who come to Portland agree with each other or have the same views - they all agree they must work together in order to engage in violence against grassroots social movements. Proud Boy Tiny makes the case here - saying he welcomes Alt-Right.

This Saturday the alt-right white nationalist Patriot Prayer and Proud Boys will be having a rally in #Portland #Oregon and everyone needs to find a way to show them how unwelcome they are. Several rallies are planned, so you can find the one that speaks to you.
Some are a safe distance away. Rose City Antifa is also at Waterfront Park where Proud Boys & Patriot Prayer are planning their armed rally
With five rally options (at least) to choose from, there is no excuse for #PDX folks to stay home. Show the white nationalists they are not welcome in Portland.
