Last night on "All Things Considered," a guy from FAIR, an anti-migrant hate group founded by a white supremacist, said that the people subject to the #PublicChargeRule "weren't objectively assessed on their self-reliance but rather their bloodline."

His language reminded me of early 20th-century eugenicists.

He went on: "So a lot of these people coming in without a - an economic reason, an employment opportunity, they're a recipe for financial disaster. They're going to cost us absolute billions of dollars."
According to FAIR and the Trump administration, immigrants who come here because of family connections are dead weight, a burden. It's therefore correct to deprive them of resources available to everyone else.

In this story, NPR did not dispute this characterization.
My cousins, aunt and uncles are all here because they were sponsored by my parents, who immigrated here in 1967. They came here because of "their bloodline."

They are not dead weight. They are not an economic burden.
They started businesses. They raised families. They are the reason why, fifty years after my parents' arrival, our American family includes small business owners, doctors, pharmacists, engineers and even one crabby science journalist.
Immigrant families like mine are literally one of the strongest economic contributors in the country. But it takes time.
First-generation immigrants cost the US economy $57.4 billion (2011-2013). Their children add a net benefit to the economy of $30.5 billion.

The grandchildren of those immigrants added a whopping $223.8 billion.

The immigrants who come here because of their "bloodline"--whom this administration seeks to punish and repel--are the reason why.

They are our support network.

They are not a "financial disaster." Cutting them off is a financial disaster.
Finally: FAIR is more than just an organization that "advocates for tightening immigration controls," as @FrancoOrdonez put it. They have been credibly described as an anti-migrant hate group.

Quote them if you want, but don't whitewash who they are.
