#HistoryKeThread Woman-To-Woman Marriage Among the Kipsigis
In the bygone years, the Kipsigis community, like the Kamba, engaged in a form of marriage in which a woman, often a childless widow, married another woman.
The Kipsigis referred to this arrangement as “ketunchi toloch”, the literal translation of which phrase is “one marries for support”.
In procuring the “wife”, the widow observed the same betrothal rites as a man seeking a wife.
Upon getting married, the newly adopted “wife” then chose a man, with whom to procreate, from amongst the relations of the widow’s previous husband.
The intention of this marriage practice was to salvage the lineage of the deceased husband through the widow’s new wife. Moreover, the widow sought to get children that she could count on for support in her old age.
I hope I got the spelling right......
