The question raised by exposing ‘hoarsewisperer’ is whether or not a prominent, possibly astroturfed influencer with a stake in protecting power should be able to smear reformers anonymously and have other users, whose lives may depend on reform, respect their privacy.
The ability to be anonymous online is essential to promote and protect the speech of those who would otherwise not be able to express themselves safely. But ‘hoarsewisperer’ isn’t one of those individuals. Frankly, there is something predatory about what that account does.
At the same time, I do wonder whether I would feel so ambivalent about this if the person behind the ‘hoarsewisperer’ account had not turned out to be exactly who every lefty on this site thought they would be.
Alright, never mind. Screw ‘em.
