The media needs to be cautious when using the term “culture wars.” This is a politically loaded concept that frames issues in very particular ways./1
The term became popular in the 1980s-1990s when the Right used this as a rallying cry. Here is Pat Buchanan at the 1992 Republican convention. @kevinkusatsu and I covered this history in #FaultLines./2

@kevinkusatsu But these issues can be discussed in very different ways.
Examples:
Civil rights are about racial justice.
Abortion is about reproductive rights.
Same sex couple rights are about equality./3
@kevinkusatsu Plastic, endangered species, and the climate are about the environment.
Gun control is about public safety.
Immigration is about human rights.
Fighting white supremacy is about national security and counterterrorism./4
@kevinkusatsu All of these “culture wars” issues, and others, are also integral to the economy. So the popular dichotomy between culture and the economy is not accurate. /5
@kevinkusatsu And if “culture wars” includes what
@realDonaldTrump's rhetoric says about--and does to--our national values, that’s a conversation that isn’t optional in 2020./6
@kevinkusatsu @realDonaldTrump It is essential to report on the debates over all of these policies, but it is equally essential to frame the issues in the right way./end
