Google just made a long-awaited announcement on Chrome's approach to privacy. Sadly it is full of excuses for *not* doing tracking protection, including the absurd claim that blocking cookies is bad for privacy. @jonathanmayer and I deconstruct the claims: freedom-to-tinker.com/2019/08/23/dec…
@jonathanmayer The Chrome team is full of smart and passionate engineers who want to do the right thing. Yet Chrome is far behind on privacy due to Google's business model. That's not a surprise, but Google's heavy spin on the announcement was frustrating and prompted us to write this takedown.
@jonathanmayer The most worrying part of the announcement is that Google wants to develop new web standards before launching even minimal privacy protections. This is a totally unnecessary distraction. Safari & Firefox have already deployed privacy features effectively.
@jonathanmayer The last time we tried to develop a web privacy standard—Do Not Track—it worked out perfectly for the ad tech industry. The negotiations dragged on for years, giving the appearance of doing something about privacy, but with nothing to show for it in the end.
