A genuine question. There seems to be a consensus that the talk of 30 days in Berlin last week has undermined Remainer hopes of moving against the Johnson government in early September (see for example the rather good article below).

You would assume that this makes a no deal Brexit more likely.

And so the question is: were Merkel and Macron unaware that this might be the effect? Was this an unforced error on their part?
Or are they at the stage where they assume that a no deal Brexit is going to happen no matter what they say, and that at this stage the only consideration is to appear open and reasonable so as to ensure that the blame remains firmly pinned on Johnson?
