A major mistake many make here is thinking the PRC is run by some wise, Sun Tzu quoting, 8-D chess, mandarins, when in fact it is a Leninist clique terrified (1) of its own people & (2) terrified of its own military having ideas per Lin Biao. Beijing is being humiliated every day
To Westerners, the Tiananmen Square massacre was a brutal and immoral crackdown on democratic activists. To many in China, the Tiananmen Square massacre was a needed restoration of an order broken by indulged and ingrate students. The mainland view of HKG is even more prejudiced
The most constructive thing Australia and other nations could do is be prepared to take a large number of (sadly imminent) Hong Kong refugees who will have a very well founded fear of persecution - and also vett them for PRC Govt plants/sleepers.

Putin wants Ukraine as the historic Russian breadbasket.
China SOE leases huge tracts of eastern Russia for farming.
Iran has been sanctioned into a perilous state esp with inflation.
Seriously good plan etc but everyone here still needs USD to buy food.
Beijing's aspiration to be a superpower runs aground, inter alia, on various reefs but at least one is that it cannot buy food in its own currency. Dependence on earning USD to feed yourself makes you a very large Venezuela.
The Sinologists on Twitter are often quite good but there is still this bonkers school stuck in the BRIC era that believes the CCP/Xi etal have some 20 dimensional chess/Sun Tzu plan when they are just Leninists, haunted by Lin Biao, trying to bluff & bully their way to tomorrow

Australia's national & *federal* elections are decided in a Westminster system of 151 local House seats across an island continent the size of the EU. We have a national election in which local candidates & local communities matter. There was always that 'Quiet Australian' vote.
One aspect of the 2019 election is that Australia is developing, even with compulsory voting, regional & demographic tribalism of other Western countries. The Coalition did best in working, middle class & rural seats.
Labor gained only in more educated & perhaps affluent seats.

@zoo_bear Three men had come to Singh's cattle shed in night where he was sleeping. Singh caught one of them. His accomplice fired 2 shots. One hit thief; other hit Singh. Both died. By April 25 when my copy published, police had identified the dead thief – Jaiprakash - and I wrote as much

Dad is in a hospital where porters + junior nurses are mostly Filipino & Black. When mum & I visited yesterday, we spoke in a mix of English & Punjabi.

Man in next bed:
“Gobbledegook!”

He repeats it, louder.

Me:
“We’re speaking another language & we understand it fine.”

“You’re in England. Speak ENGLISH,” he spits out.

I don’t reply. He’s sick man in hospital bed. It’s not my place.

Instead, I go & talk to Head Nurse (English) & tell her. She goes into ward & talks to man behind his drawn curtains. Tells him racist comments unacceptable.

Later, I leave my Mum & Dad there & head off.

This morning I speak with Mum on phone. “After you left he was mumbling bad stuff again, I don’t know what, about Muslims or something. I worried he’d do something to Dad in the night. Call them.”

how many news articles have you seen abt Trump/Alabama that use “lie” or “liar”? (me: zero.) we all marvel at Trump behavior but the press’ behavior on this front is also largely indefensible

Have only read 1 chapter of "Escape" by Manjula Padmanabhan but, boy, is it promising!

Is this going to be a story rivaling Rosemary's baby or The Stepford wives which uses horror as a medium for social commentary on the role of women in society?
Well, it was a great premise, I must admit. The characters, too, were powerful. But it falters quite a bit in execution as it suffers from bad pacing and a flat climax. It reclaims itself a little bit towards the very end but not enough. (3 out of 5)
Escape by Manjula Padmanabhan has the makings of a very good story. In a futuristic India, women (or "vermin") are completely eradicated when another means of child-rearing is discovered.
