In June Jeffries dismissed impeachment, saying "the overwhelming majority of the caucus" isn't for it. Now the overwhelming majority (139 Ds) support it. Vulnerable members are getting grilled back home. Time to shift out of "if" mode and into "how/when." politico.com/story/2019/08/…
If the House impeaches Trump, he is impeached. The point is to state for future generations that Trump's conduct is unacceptable. Only impeachment achieves this. Anything else is normalization. History will not give much weight to outraged statements.
History records two presidents as being impeached, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Neither was removed from office by the Senate. (Nixon resigned before being impeached.) Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution states that the House "shall have the sole power of Impeachment."

Today's NYT: someone called Bret Stephens a bedbug so he googled "Jews as bedbugs" to reverse-engineer a column calling his critics Nazis, forgot to clear the search and declined to note that the citation did not substantiate the anti-Semitic connotation he based his column on.
There is so much good journalism going on at the NYT. What is so deeply frustrating is that the stuff that embarrasses and undermines it as an institution seems so easily preventable.
Yup, it seems like Bret did the "jews as bedbugs" search himself. Following the lead of @nycsouthpaw I clicked the link in his column and got the same result. Here's a screenshot.

This. Because Dems went nuclear in 2013, we confirmed more Obama judges and left fewer vacancies for McConnell/Trump to fill. If we hadn’t gone nuclear, there would be fewer Obama judges and more vacancies for Trump. There is zero chance McConnell doesn’t go nuclear on his own.
This misunderstands the mechanics. McConnell could use any nominee to go nuclear on all nominees. So the first time Dems filibustered *any* Trump nominee - say, Jeff Sessions - McConnell could and would have gone nuclear on all nominees, including judges.
Let’s say for the sake of argument that McConnell didn’t have the votes to go nuclear in Jan 2017. A series of Dem filibusters of Trump nominees would have gotten him there. And Dem filibusters of Trump nominees - again, of any kind - were inevitable. @sahilkapur @jadler1969

McConnell whipped against the ACA, a bill modeled on a GOP plan, to deny it the cache of bipartisanship. He has no desire for the Senate to achieve bipartisan outcomes. He likes the filibuster because it distributes power asymmetrically to the GOP, the party of the status quo.
Progressives wield their power by passing big laws. Conservatives wield theirs by blocking change and securing control of institutions like the judiciary, which then block change even when Republicans are out of power. Obstruction has a strong partisan lean - to the right.
Whenever power & principle conflict, McConnell picks power. He has flipped on everything: amendments, filling the tree, blue slips, confirming a SCOTUS justice in a presidential election. He went nuclear to confirm Gorsuch. He'll flip on the filibuster the second it benefits him.

A note on #impeachment -

In a court of law, under non-presidential circumstances, impeachment is a tool litigation attorneys use to discredit the opposing side's witnesses at trial. When said witness takes the stand under oath attys. present evidence contrary to what the witness
claims. This weakens the other side's case by discrediting impeached witnesses's testimony. Once a witness has been impeached - by presentment of inconsistent testimony - the judge/jury can no longer use the impeached witnesses's testimony in reaching a verdict.
Simply put, they aren't trustworthy. In the case of Presidential impeachment that broad definition of impeachment applies, but the impeachment tool is used for a very different purpose. Under the Constitution, a sitting President cannot be tried in a court of law for anything.
