Today's NYT: someone called Bret Stephens a bedbug so he googled "Jews as bedbugs" to reverse-engineer a column calling his critics Nazis, forgot to clear the search and declined to note that the citation did not substantiate the anti-Semitic connotation he based his column on.
There is so much good journalism going on at the NYT. What is so deeply frustrating is that the stuff that embarrasses and undermines it as an institution seems so easily preventable.
Yup, it seems like Bret did the "jews as bedbugs" search himself. Following the lead of @nycsouthpaw I clicked the link in his column and got the same result. Here's a screenshot.
@nycsouthpaw Here's the NYT's response to @nycsouthpaw's original thread. It's a confusing response because the link goes to the exact quote cited in the column. I'd hate to think this is hair-splitting - i.e., Bret provided the link but an editor "added" it...?
