This is another puzzle piece of what I've been talking about the past few days.

A lot of these things, it might seem like "Oh, this is just changing how they handle corner cases and gray areas." But what they're doing is creating gray areas.

And again, 300 millino people.
Three hundred million people means we are a nation of corner cases. We're all outliers on some axis.
And if they can make citizenship murky enough along enough different parameters, then if they can't find a "legitimate" grounds to question citizenship... well, they've succeeded in making the whole thing seem really subjective anyway.
They want citizenship to not be a status that is settled but something they choose to recognize or not, case by base and day by day.
And as I've been saying: once it's accepted that only citizens get due process, then their decision is final. No appeals.

Political reality being messy they can't just get there in a single bound. Muddying the waters of what citizenship is helps them get away with it more.
