Next week we could be back in caretaker-row territory. That means we’re going to take our focus off the government and start arguing again about whether it should be Jeremy Corbyn who leads any temporary gov. If we do that, it’s game-over: Johnson gets his coup and no-deal.
I’ve argued Corbyn should lead that gov- but that argument is dead. Tory Remainers would rather have no-deal. That may be vile but it’s also the reality. Remainers on left must accept it. If we have a stand-off we fall over the cliff-edge together, and that makes us just as bad.
Danger is unprecedented. We must, must act to safeguard our democratic institutions and avoid the generational calamity of no-deal. We must be the better people. If it can’t be Corbyn, accept someone else. Please let’s appreciate the danger of this moment and rise to defeat it.
