This was done deliberately in the 1800s. During the 1700s Christianity was preached to Black slaves to keep them docile, the idea being if they converted they would be less inclined to rebel. The Bible does have texts supporting slavery. Other passages were literally removed.
In 1824 The American Bible Society and others began producing tracts to help create a strong "Jesus centered national identity" and images of Jesus and the saints were always portrayed as white.
This created conscious, and unconscious, associations between White God and his son White Jesus and the power of white people.

It was deliberately done by people who knew better to control those who did not.
