American pioneers, including Pa Ingalls, frequently settled on land that was designated for Indians. It was illegal. Those settlements provoked defensive action by the native people living there. The military came and sometimes, rarely, settlers were forced to leave.
More often they were allowed to encroach further and further, the borders of Indian Country got redrawn again and again and eventually simply opened up. Reservations expanded, contracted, and some disappeared altogether.
We've done several episodes on the impact of allotment in Oklahoma, although this played out across the US and Canada.

We focused on Oklahoma because our guest is Cherokee and we were talking about Warren and this persistent myth of Indian ancestry.

None of this is lost or secret history. Courageous migrants coming to these shores with nothing but the shirt on their back and a dream of glory is the foundational myth of America. Bravely conquering the original inhabitants and claiming rights over the riches.
This is what America fears.

America fears this happening to them. Losing their stature. All the excuses they make about conquest and the rights of the victor. They fear those things happening to them.

They brag about it. And defend against it.

The experience of the Five Civilized Tribes is instructive. They did everything right. Fought in Jackson's wars. Structured a western style government, agriculture, trade.

They adapted.

They still got removed.

Archeology and linguistics tells us that the Diné came south before settling in what is now known as the four corners area in the US. They and other Athabascan groups the Apache, Kiowa, and others are related to peoples in the northwest of the continent.
The Diné creation story talks about traveling through three worlds before arriving at this fourth world.

Which layered with what is known about the migration of their distant relatives is fascinating.

It matters that the Little House books were written and published during the depression.

Wilder had been keeping diaries for decades. She and her daughter had been writing columns, short stories. Her daughter, Rose Lane, had a talent for embellishment to the point of fraud
But during the depression they both needed money very badly. Lane was likely bipolar with periods of extreme depression after manic episodes in which she spent recklessly. She achieved some literary success, but the financial gain was unreliable because she was unreliable

The Christian narrative is one of perpetual wandering. Cast from Eden they are forever strangers in a strange land.

But for Black and Indigenous people that means something very different. We were not cast from Eden.
If the original sin of the colonized west is genocide and slavery, that is not our sin. And yet it rendered us homeless as surely as the apple in the Hebrew narrative.
Forcibly displanted again and again (credit to @AnthonyNMorgan for that term) Black and Indigenous people seek to create, and return, home.

#Trump domestic policy is to employ #Native Leaders who can advise him about accessing #Native land under the guise of cutting Commerce Dept regulations which would open up #Reservations to #BigOil Industry.
#Trump has set up a #NativeAmerican Affairs Coalition w/ 27 tribal members to advise him about the needs of Indian Country. The issue that concerns #Trump & the #native group the most is the desire to access the natural energy reserves on #Reservations.
