Hi So this is going to be a longish thread on impunity in Kashmir. Over the last 2 days we’ve gotten a picture of the pervasiveness of human rts violations in Kashmir. Today we ask the question. Why. don’t the courts do something? Why is there no accountability for these crimes?
Let's begin with a quote from a High Court judge, Justice Rizvi made in a PIL filed by Advocate Jaleel Andrabi about illegal detentions and custodial deaths in 1995. Advocate Andrabi was himself tortured and killed in custody. The screen cap is from a @jkccs_ report on torture

This is what I had tweeted a couple of days ago. So what exactly are these nightmares? And did they ever end or simply keep changing forms ?
The violently rigged elections of 1987 are often seen as the cause of armed insurgency in Kashmir when many “defeated” pro freedom candidates crossed the LOC and declared war on India.

I've returned after 9 days under the communications blackout in Kashmir, and one word that has stuck with me is “zulm.” From teenagers to the elderly, so many asked: “Kyun kar raha hai India itna zulm hum par?” / “Why is India committing such oppression on us?"

As an independent journalist, going to #Kashmir in this crisis wasn’t easy. As I am not affiliated with any organisation,I don’t have an identity card representing any media organisation.The worry was,how do you convince the forces you are a journalist.
Thankfully,DM issued a movement pass and I could do my job. Many journo friends and acquaintances discouraged me from going, handful were genuinely concerned for my own safety and others either love to toe the government line or couldn’t go themselves for some constraints.
The best part of being an independent journalist is you don’t have to take endless in-house permissions, you just go because you believe in it. I went with a conviction that I am a reporter and my primary job is tell stories of people, hear the voices that have not been heard.

Regardless of the veracity of the terror threat in #Kashmir, that the government used it as subterfuge to prepare the ground for its dramatic steps is now beyond question.
Yet, among all the din of jubilation and paeans to the ‘making of history’, the fact that the government most probably misled the people over the nature of a terrorist threat is now almost an irrelevant aside. #Article370 #Article35A

THREAD: Six years ago, in July 2013, I was in #Kashmir. My stay there for work and travel purposes coincided with the onset of #AmarnathYatra due to which never ending convoy movement & overwhelming troop deployment on various Yatra (religious pilgrimage) routes. (1/n)
The Yatris comported themselves as militant Hindu nationalists, carrying the bhagwa & Indian flags. They aggressively shouted slogans like- Bharat me rehna hai, bam bam bhole kehna hai” (“If you want to live in India, you have to chant Shiva’s name”). (2/n)
They littered the place with garbage heaps, washed clothes and themselves openly. Recently, pictures of open defecation have gone viral on social media. Absolute disregard for cleanliness and the environment was palpable in their behavior. (3/n)

Al Qaida's As Sahab media has now released a video statement of it's #Kashmir operative, Faisal Ishfaq Bhat, now based in Afghanistan. In around 30-minute-long statement, he details his Jihadi journey since 90s from Kashmir and association with Ghazi Baba. 1/n.
In the first part of his speech, the al Qaeda operative Faisal praises Ghazi Baba's ideology & military strategy which he says was free from the influence of Pakistan secret agencies. He says he was initially trained by Ghazi Baba somewhere in Bandipora in mid '90s. 2/n
Faisal narrates that due to internal rifts in Harkat-ul-Ansaar (the earlier version of Jaish-e-Muhammad) he and his associates lost contact with Ghazi Baba and then they decided to cross over to Pakistan for better arms training. 3/n #Kashmir
